A calculator is only as correct as the question you ask it. “15% of 80” is not the same problem as “80 increased to 92.” Unit conversion is not the same as changing currency. Date math is not the same as a legal age rule in every country. Tool Base calculators apply documented formulas to the numbers you enter. They are general math helpers, not licensed advice.

Unit Conversion: Length, Weight, Area, Volume, Speed, Storage

Unit converters multiply by a factor. 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters exactly in everyday SI conversion. The unit converter covers mixed categories; dedicated tools such as the length converter, weight, area, volume, and speed converter keep the unit lists shorter so you pick the pair you meant.

Weight, area, and volume follow published factors as well. Digital storage is the usual source of confusion: some tools treat 1 KB as 1000 bytes (SI) and others as 1024 bytes (binary). Read the data storage converter notes. Mixing the two is how a “2 GB” file disagrees with an OS disk listing.

Speed conversions are straightforward once the unit pair is explicit (km/h versus m/s). Time conversions that look like units (hours to seconds) belong in the time converter. They are not the same as time-zone conversions, which depend on civil calendars and offsets.

Temperature

Temperature is not a simple multiply-only conversion. Celsius to Fahrenheit: (°C × 9/5) + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin is Celsius + 273.15. Example: 20°C → (20 × 9/5) + 32 = 68°F. Use the temperature converter when you do not want to restage the formula by hand.

Percentages, Fractions, Averages, and Ratios

Percentage of a number: (percentage ÷ 100) × number. Example: 15% of 80 = 12. Percentage change: ((new − original) ÷ original) × 100. Example: 80 to 92 = 15% increase. The percentage calculator is for the first family of questions. If you mix “percent of” with “percent change,” you will get a confident wrong number.

The fraction calculator is for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and simplifying fractions. Keep the same whole: 1/2 + 1/3 is 5/6, not 2/5. An average of a list is the sum divided by the count of items — the average calculator needs at least one number; empty lists are undefined. Ratios compare parts; simplifying 10:15 to 2:3 in the ratio calculator does not change the relationship.

The discount calculator applies a percentage off a listed price. Example: 20% off 50 is 40. That is arithmetic. It is not a coupon policy, stacking rule, or “member price.”

Tax and Tips — Arithmetic Only

Tax-exclusive: tax = net × rate. Gross = net + tax. Tax-inclusive: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). Example at 10%: a 110 inclusive amount has 100 net and 10 tax if the rate applies that way. The VAT / tax calculator uses the rate and amounts you type. Real-world VAT, sales tax, and exemptions differ by jurisdiction. These helpers are not filing software and not professional tax advice.

The tip calculator applies a chosen percentage of a bill. Rounding conventions (per person versus per table) are social, not mathematical laws. Split after you know whether tax is included in the base you are tipping on — that choice is yours, not a universal rule.

Dates, Ages, and Time Zones

Age in whole years depends on birthday-of-year rules. The age calculator and date difference calculator count calendar days or whole years as documented on each page. Leap days exist. Crossing February 29 in a leap year is why “365 days later” is not always “next year, same date.”

Time-zone conversion uses IANA timezone data in the browser when the tool says so. DST gaps and overlaps can still surprise you around transition hours. The time zone converter is for civil time, not for stopwatch physics. Always include the date: 09:00 in America/New_York is a different offset in July than in January.

Specialized Calculators

Some questions need a dedicated estimator rather than a generic percentage tool. The totaled car value calculator models vehicle value minus deductible. The capital gains tax calculator on sale of property uses the rate you enter. Students can try the middle school gpa calculator or AP score estimators such as the ap chem score calculator. Retirement compounding lives on the retirement calculator dave ramsey page as an independent Tool Base projection, and site work can start with the tree removal cost calculator. Those pages label estimates clearly; they are not official insurance, tax, College Board, or contractor results.

How to Avoid Wrong Answers

  • Write the question in words before you pick a tool.
  • Check units on both sides of a conversion.
  • Do not treat percentage points as percent change.
  • Do not use a tax calculator as legal or accounting advice.
  • Re-read outputs that look too clean — a missing decimal is common.

Worked Mini Examples

  1. 12% of 250 = 0.12 × 250 = 30.
  2. A 5 kg mass is 5000 g. A 5 km length is 5000 m. Same prefix, different quantities — do not mix them.
  3. Average of 4, 6, 10 = 20 / 3 ≈ 6.667 if you keep three decimals.
  4. From 09:00 in America/New_York to Europe/London, the offset depends on the date, not a single winter number all year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did two unit converters disagree?

They may use different conventions (especially for digital storage) or different rounding. Read each tool’s notes and compare the factors, not just the labels.

Is a tax calculator official?

No. It is general math based on the rate and amounts you provide. Local rules, exemptions, and rounding can differ.

What is the percentage change formula?

((new − original) / original) × 100. The original value belongs in the denominator unless you have a documented reason to do otherwise.

Can time-zone conversion be off by an hour?

Yes, around daylight saving transitions, or if the wrong zone identifier is selected. Check the date as well as the clock time.
